Straw men can't think

We’re in trouble. Dangerous trouble.

When the President of the United States can’t speak to the school children of America without setting off a firestorm fueled by right wing make-believe, we’re in trouble.

This thing about the school children welled up within hours. Thanks to the Internet and pre-existing organization, the alarm spread through the right wing at warp speed. Near instantaneous.

Our country is very close to being run by the politics of fear. That's dangerous.

How did we get here?

We got here by unleashing this powerful new beast, the Internet. On Sept. 17 at the University of Texas at Austin they are hosting a speech by Bob Taylor, the man folks think is most responsible for creating the net, 40 years ago. He's a UT alum, by the way, giving rise to another opportunity to plug the university's motto, "What starts here changes the world."

We got here through a series events that included: Demise of the Fairness Doctrine, advent of Rupert Murdoch promising to "change the face of American media forever," when he first bought the New York Post and then created this super-right wing, make up the hate as you go, service called Fox News, and the nasty, basal, simple appeal to the uneducated masses of Rush Limbaugh.

When honest news brokers begin to lose numbers to these nut cases, they made counter moves. Unfortunately. So now, instead of enlightenment and information passed on to viewers/listeners, we get inundated by a barrage of yelling, screaming, "believe like I believe or go to HELL," idiots who ...bottom line ....have nothing to contribute except loud.

I absolutely hate having to say what I am about to say, but here is the bottom line that I fear no one will hear nor act on. Unless and until both sides of the political discussion in this country learn statesmanship, learn that we are AMERICANS first and not Republicans or Democrats, learn to reach across the aisle and work together, and stop ranting and raving and namecalling and race baiting and hating each other....we are headed, face first down a swirling porcelain abyss to chaos.

Problem is..we may already be there.

God HELP America.
